Spring 2017 Art With Fabric Blog Hop

I'm so excited to be a part of the Spring 2017 Art With Fabric Blog Hop being sponsored by TweloQ! When I heard "women who inspire you" and "fiber art" in the same sentence, I had to jump on board. Unfortunately, I've had to halt my quilting with Alida's QAL. It turns out that's hard to do with a 7 month old! Most of the artwork featured in this blog hop is quilting, and since I'm the only crocheter, I thought I would keep it simple. Speaking of simple, my inspiration is anything but!

Olek is an amazing Polish-American textiles artist based in New York. She is a bold street artist and an amazing crocheter. Check this out!

You can find more of her work here at OlekNYC. She is definitely all about, "I am woman, hear me roar."

My piece is kind of a two-for-one because another inspiration of mine is a tiny little yarn store in my cozy corner of Berea, Kentucky called Fiber Frenzy. These ladies make some gorgeous stuff, and they stock the most beautiful, luxuriously soft yarns!

On April 29th, they sponsored a Yarn Bomb The Yard event where everyone crocheted or knitted a very simple strip of single crochets and attached a cute little flower. All of the strips were sewn together to create a big collage of knitted and crocheted strips to decorate the big tree in their yard. I thought, yes! Kat Knap's first street art project!

To capture a little bit of Olek's spry spirit while keeping it, we'll say, appropriate for all audiences, I used Red Heart Super Saver Bikini to get some wild, bright colors! I thought a simple little turquoise flower would be a cute touch, and I will be writing up this pattern to publish here for free!

I'll be getting this pattern up ASAP, but in the meantime, who are your favorite textile artists? Who inspires your craft?
May muses whisper to you always,
Kat

  4. Hi Kat, I can see why you're inspired by Olek - I just had a look at the train, WOW!!! I've always wanted to participate in a Yarn Bomb event. I'm sure that there's a place for a fibre artist in there. Thanks for your post!

    1. Ha, I learned how to crochet very young as well! I was around 8 when my mother taught me. I tell the story in this post:

  7. I think your piece is perfect for the blog hop. I admire you for taking a few minutes from being a mom to crochet up a piece for the tree. I should get out my crochet hook again. I haven't touched it in years.
